Privacy Policy

Effective date: August 2026

Most privacy policies are written to be skimmed past. This one covers everything it legally has to cover, but I’ve tried to write it in language you can actually read, because you shouldn’t need a law degree to find out what happens to your email address.

Your Nurse Knows is a blog about sleep, home, style, and recovery for people who work night shifts and odd hours. This policy explains what information the site collects when you visit, why it’s collected, who it might be shared with, and what you can do about any of it. By using Your Nurse Knows, you’re agreeing to what’s described here. If you don’t agree with something in this policy, the right move is to stop using the site.

Our Position on Visitors Under 13

Your Nurse Knows is written for working adults, and it isn’t directed at children. I don’t knowingly collect personal information from anyone under the age of 13, and no part of the site is designed to appeal to children.

If you’re a parent or guardian and you believe your child has submitted personal information here through a comment, a form, or a newsletter signup, email me at [email protected]. I’ll locate it and delete it from my records promptly.

The Information This Site Collects

There are two kinds of information involved. The first is information you choose to give me. The second is information collected automatically by the technology that runs the site.

Information you provide directly:

  • Your name, when you leave a comment or fill in a form
  • Your email address, when you subscribe to the newsletter or contact me
  • Any message content you send through the contact form
  • Your website URL, if you choose to include one with a comment
  • Billing or payment details, if a paid product or service is ever offered here

Information collected automatically:

  • Your IP address
  • Your browser type and version
  • Your operating system
  • Your internet service provider
  • Date and time stamps for your visit
  • The pages you viewed and how long you stayed
  • The referring page or search term that brought you here
  • General geographic location, at the country or city level

This information reaches Your Nurse Knows in a few ways: through forms you fill in, through the comment section, through newsletter signups, through server log files, through analytics software, and through cookies stored in your browser.

What Happens With Your Information

The information collected is used to keep the site running and to make it better. In practice that means:

  • Operating, maintaining, and improving Your Nurse Knows
  • Understanding which articles are useful and which ones need rewriting
  • Responding when you email me or leave a comment
  • Sending the newsletter, if you’ve asked for it
  • Personalizing what you see so the site is more relevant to you
  • Detecting and preventing fraud, spam, and abuse
  • Meeting legal obligations where they apply

I don’t sell your personal information. I don’t rent it out, and I don’t trade it.

Where Product Links Lead

Your Nurse Knows takes part in affiliate programs, including the Amazon Services LLC Associates Program. This is an affiliate advertising program designed to provide a way for sites to earn advertising fees by linking to Amazon.com and affiliated sites. I also take part in other affiliate programs with retailers selling bedding, blackout curtains, scrubs, sleep products, and home goods.

What this means practically: some links on this site are affiliate links. If you click one and buy something, I may earn a small commission. The price you pay is exactly the same either way. No commission is added to your cost.

Clicking an affiliate link may place a cookie in your browser so the retailer can attribute the purchase. That cookie is set and controlled by the retailer, not by Your Nurse Knows.

About the Cookies on This Site

Cookies are small text files a website stores in your browser. They let a site remember things between visits, like whether you’ve already dismissed a notice or filled in your details in a comment form.

Cookies on this site are used to remember your preferences, keep you from having to retype information, understand how the site is being used, and support the functions described elsewhere in this policy.

You’re not obligated to accept them. Every major browser lets you block cookies, delete existing ones, or warn you before one is stored. The settings live in your browser’s privacy or security menu. Blocking cookies won’t lock you out of Your Nurse Knows, though some parts of the site may work less smoothly.

Pixels, Tags, and Similar Tools

Alongside cookies, this site and its partners may use web beacons, tracking pixels, and tags. These are tiny, usually invisible files embedded in pages or emails that register when something has been loaded.

They’re used to count visits, understand which content is being read, measure whether a newsletter was opened, and support any advertising described below. They don’t collect your name, your address, or your payment details.

Server Logs

Like nearly every site on the internet, Your Nurse Knows uses log files. The hosting server automatically records IP addresses, browser types, internet service providers, date and time stamps, referring pages, and click counts.

None of this is linked to information that identifies you personally. It’s used to analyze traffic patterns, diagnose technical problems, keep the server secure, and gather general demographic information.

Traffic Measurement Through Google Analytics

Your Nurse Knows uses Google Analytics to understand how visitors find and use the site. Google Analytics collects information such as how often people visit, which pages they open, and what other sites they used before arriving here.

Google’s own privacy practices govern how that data is handled, and you can read them at https://policies.google.com/privacy. If you’d rather not be included at all, Google offers a browser add-on that opts you out of Analytics entirely, available at https://tools.google.com/dlpage/gaoptout.

Advertising Partners, Present and Future

Your Nurse Knows may work with third-party advertising partners now or at some point in the future. Where that happens, those partners may use cookies, web beacons, or similar technologies to serve advertisements that are relevant to your interests, and to measure how those advertisements perform.

These partners set and control their own cookies, and their own privacy policies govern what they do with the information collected. This policy doesn’t cover their practices.

If you’d prefer not to see interest-based advertising, you can opt out through either of these industry programs:

Opting out stops advertising from being personalized to you. It doesn’t stop advertising from appearing.

Videos, Images, and Other Embedded Material

Some articles include embedded content from other websites, such as videos, images, or social media posts. Embedded content behaves exactly as though you had visited that other website directly.

That means those sites may collect data about you, use cookies, run their own tracking, and monitor your interaction with the embedded item, including if you have an account and are logged in with them. Your Nurse Knows has no control over what they collect.

Where This Policy Stops Applying

This site links out to retailers, manufacturers, research organizations, and other blogs. Once you click through, you’re on someone else’s website and this policy no longer applies.

Each of those sites has its own privacy policy and its own way of handling data. I’d encourage you to read them, particularly before entering personal or payment information anywhere.

The Newsletter and How It Works

If you subscribe to the newsletter, your email address is stored with an email service provider and used to send you articles, updates, and occasional recommendations relevant to shift work, sleep, home, and style.

You’ll only receive email if you’ve asked to. In line with CAN-SPAM requirements, every email sent from Your Nurse Knows will identify who it’s from, will not use deceptive subject lines, will include a physical mailing address, and will include a working unsubscribe link.

Your email address won’t be sold or handed to anyone for their own marketing.

Leaving the List

You can unsubscribe at any time using the link at the bottom of any email you’ve received from Your Nurse Knows. It takes one click, and no explanation is needed.

If the link isn’t working, or you’d rather have your details removed entirely rather than just unsubscribed, email [email protected] and I’ll take care of it manually.

Comments and Social Platforms

When you leave a comment, the comment text, your name, your email address, your IP address, and your browser user agent string are stored. This helps with spam detection and lets me reply to you.

An anonymized string created from your email address, called a hash, may be sent to a gravatar service to check whether you have a profile image. Comments and their metadata are retained so that follow-up replies can be recognized and approved rather than held in a queue.

Interacting with Your Nurse Knows on social platforms is governed by those platforms’ own privacy policies, not by this one.

How Long Things Are Kept

Comments and their metadata are kept indefinitely, so that follow-up comments from the same person can be recognized and approved automatically.

Newsletter subscriber details are kept until you unsubscribe or ask to be removed. Contact form messages are kept as long as they’re useful for correspondence. Analytics and log data are kept according to the retention settings of the services involved.

If you want your data deleted sooner than any of this, ask and I’ll do it.

When Information Gets Shared

Your information may be shared in a small number of situations:

  • Service providers. Companies that host the site, deliver email, or run analytics need access to do their jobs. They’re only permitted to use it for that purpose.
  • Legal requirements. If a law, court order, or government request requires disclosure, or if disclosure is needed to protect rights, safety, or property.
  • Business transfer. If Your Nurse Knows is ever sold, merged, or transferred, user information may be part of the transferred assets. You’d be notified of any change in ownership or use.

Outside of those cases, your information stays where it is.

How Your Data Is Protected

Reasonable, industry-standard measures are in place to protect the information collected here, including secure hosting, encrypted connections, and restricted access to stored data.

That said, no method of transmitting information over the internet or storing it electronically is completely secure. I can’t guarantee absolute security, and neither can anyone else who tells you otherwise.

Rights for Visitors in the European Economic Area

If you’re located in the European Economic Area or the United Kingdom, the General Data Protection Regulation gives you the following rights over your personal data:

  • Right of access. You can request copies of the personal data held about you.
  • Right to rectification. You can ask for inaccurate information to be corrected, or incomplete information to be completed.
  • Right to erasure. You can ask for your personal data to be deleted, in certain circumstances.
  • Right to restrict processing. You can ask that processing of your data be limited, in certain circumstances.
  • Right to object to processing. You can object to how your data is being processed, in certain circumstances.
  • Right to data portability. You can ask that your data be transferred to another organization, or directly to you, in a commonly used format.
  • Right to withdraw consent. Where processing is based on your consent, you can withdraw it at any time.
  • Right to lodge a complaint. You can complain to your national data protection supervisory authority if you believe your rights have been breached.

To exercise any of these, email [email protected]. I have one month to respond. There’s no charge for making a request.

Rights for California Residents

If you’re a California resident, the California Consumer Privacy Act gives you the following rights:

  • The right to know. You can request disclosure of the categories and specific pieces of personal information collected about you, the sources it came from, the purpose for collecting it, and any third parties it’s been shared with.
  • The right to delete. You can request deletion of personal information collected about you, subject to certain exceptions.
  • The right to opt out of the sale of personal information. Your Nurse Knows does not sell personal information. If that ever changes, a clearly labeled “Do Not Sell My Personal Information” option will be added to the site.
  • The right to non-discrimination. Exercising any of these rights will not result in different treatment, worse service, or different pricing.

Send requests to [email protected]. I have one month to respond, and the response is free.

Changes to This Page

This policy may be updated from time to time, whether because the site changes, the services it uses change, or the law changes. When it’s updated, the effective date at the top of this page changes with it.

Continuing to use Your Nurse Knows after an update means you accept the revised policy. You’re responsible for checking this page periodically. I won’t email you every time a line is reworded.

I read these myself and reply as quickly as I can.
